Gandhiji sees Ram Rajya
Gandhiji honoured Vijay Bhatt by watching excerpts of his much acclaimed 'Ram Rajya' (1943). He saw 90 minutes of the film, exceeding the originally given time limit of 40 minutes. Vijay Bhatt thus holds the credit of being the only filmmaker whose film was seen by Gandhiji in his lifetime!

In 1947, Bhatt's 'Ram Rajya', which had enjoyed a stupendous run at the box office, premiered in the US at the prestigious Museum of Modern Art in New York on the 5th of May. Subsequent screenings were held on the 6th and 7th of May, under the auspices of Indian Society of America, of which Dr. Chandrashekhar was the President. Later, a banquet was held in Bhatt's honor at the Hotel Waldorf Astoria in New York, with the President of the Motion Picture Association of America, Mr. Eric Johnston as the guest of honor. On behalf of the hosts, Mr. Skouras, the President of Twentieth Century Fox, presented a scroll of honor to Bhatt for his contribution to the Indian Film Industry.

While touring the US (1947), Vijay Bhatt had the opportunity to meet the renowned Hollywood director Cecil B.DeMille. Seen here, the legendary director showing a sketch of his then upcoming picture to Vijay Bhatt. Cecil B. D'Mille even wrote a message when Bhatt sought his autograph.

It read - "Greetings from one director who is still trying to make good pictures, to another director, who will make great ones long after I am gone."

In 1954, Vijay Bhatt was invited by the Soviet Government on the occasion of the first Indian Film Festival in Russia, where 'Baiju Bawra' was an official entry. The film was so well received that it was even purchased by the USSR Government.

Vijay Bhatt was awarded a gold medal and a scroll of honour by the late Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi in appreciation for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema in 1978, at a function organised by the Indian Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Indian Talkies.

Soon after his death, Bhatt was honoured at the International Film festival held in Calcutta in January 1994. A retrospective of his films was held here. Both filmmakers and artists paid him glowing tributes, at the same time lamenting the fact that he was never given the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which he rightly deserved.
